Where is Phu Quoc National Park located?
Phu Quoc National Park covers the hills that run down the island’s spine and much of the north. Its forest stretches from behind Ganh Dau and Bai Thom in the northwest and northeast down to the slopes above Ham Ninh.

How to get to Phu Quoc National Park?
This is where the park differs from national parks in Europe, the US or Australia. Parts of the forest are used by rangers and the military, partly to protect it from poaching and fire.
Visitors’ reviews from 2021 to 2026 describe closed gates, guards and checkpoints on forest roads. The park’s own website does not publish trails, opening hours or entrance fees (checked October 2026).
In practice, you have three ways to see Phu Quoc National Park.
Join a Guided Trek or Tour
A guided trek is the easiest way into the forest. Local operators handle the route, the timing and any permission needed. Half-day hikes are common, and the trails are steep and rough rather than manicured.

Visit the Streams and Trails on the Forest Edge
Some spots on the edge of the park are open to visitors without a tour.
- Suoi Tranh: a stream and small waterfall in the Ham Ninh hills, with a walking path and a small entrance fee.
- Suoi Da Ban: a stream of smooth granite boulders and clear pools, a popular local picnic spot.
- Ganh Dau trail: a forest trail in the northwest, near the coast.
The streams flow strongly in the rainy months and after rain. By the end of the dry season, the water level can drop sharply.
Drive Through on the Northern Roads
The roads across the north of the island, to Rach Vem, Ganh Dau and Bai Thom, pass through or along Phu Quoc National Park. A drive is the simplest way to feel how big the forest is.

Wildlife and Forest of Phu Quoc National Park
The bulk of Phu Quoc National Park is lowland and hill evergreen forest. Dipterocarp forest grows on the slopes, melaleuca on wetter ground and mangroves along the river mouths.
In March 2025, six trees in the park were recognised as Vietnam Heritage Trees. Two of them are kơ nia trees (Irvingia malayana) estimated at about 800 years old.
Plants and Flowers
Look for sim (rose myrtle), whose pink and purple flowers brighten the hills in the dry months, and wild orchids on the tree trunks. Climbing vines, ferns and medicinal plants fill the forest floor.

Animals to Look For
The park lists the great hornbill, the Bengal and pygmy slow lorises, the Indochinese silvered langur, the small-clawed otter, long-tailed macaques and the king cobra.
Set your expectations. The forest is dense and the animals are shy, so a short walk rarely brings sightings. Hornbills are sometimes seen early in the morning along the forest edge.
Chua Mountain and Tien Son Peak
Chua Mountain (Nui Chua), usually given as 603 m, is the summit of Phu Quoc National Park and of the whole island. It lies inside the protected forest, so do not attempt it on your own.
Treks to the island’s high ground run as guided tours. Tien Son Peak is the route several operators sell, with steep, rooty sections and wide views over the forest when the sky is clear.
Go with a licensed guide, start early and turn back if rain sets in. The trails become slippery fast.
When to Visit Phu Quoc National Park
The dry season, November to April, is the comfortable time to hike Phu Quoc National Park. Trails are firmer and mornings are cooler.
The rainy season, May to October, makes the forest lush and the streams full, but trails turn muddy and slippery. Tours may change routes after heavy rain.
Whatever the month, start between 6 and 8 AM. It is cooler, and birds are more active.
Rules and Practical Tips
Phu Quoc National Park protects a fragile forest. In the dry season, thousands of hectares are rated at high fire risk.
- Do not light fires, smoke on the trail or leave rubbish.
- Stay with your guide and on the path.
- Do not feed animals, pick plants or take anything from the forest.
- Wear long trousers and proper shoes; the trails are rough and there are snakes.
- Bring water, insect repellent and a light rain jacket.
- Phone signal can be weak inside the forest, so tell your hotel your plan.
What to eat near Phu Quoc National Park?
After a hike, head to the fishing villages on the northern coast. Ganh Dau, Bai Thom and Cua Can serve simple, fresh seafood.
- Goi ca trich: raw herring salad with grated coconut, onion and herbs, wrapped in rice paper.
- Nhum nuong: grilled sea urchin with scallion oil and crushed peanuts.
- Bun ken: rice noodles with a rich fish and coconut milk sauce, a local breakfast.
- Banh tet mat cat: sticky rice cake coloured by the leaves of the mat cat plant.

A visit to Phu Quoc National Park pairs well with the north coast.
- Rach Vem (Starfish Beach): shallow water with red starfish near the shore. Look, do not lift them out of the water.
- Ganh Dau Cape: sunset views and, on clear days, the Cambodian coast across the sea.
- Cua Can River: calm water for kayaking through mangroves.
- Bai Dai: a long, quiet beach on the northwest coast.

Is there an entrance fee for Phu Quoc National Park?
There is no main ticket gate, and the park does not publish an entrance fee. Visitors usually join a guided tour, which covers access. Some edge sites, such as Suoi Tranh, charge a small fee.
